Configuration pertains to the type, size, model, address, ownership, location and network relationship of all IT components. Configuration Management is then the accurate and timely tracking of this information and delivering it for integration with all other systems management disciplines. (See white paper on config mgmt)
Inventory Management is the process of developing and managing a database of all IT components and the number of each in a configuration.
Asset Management is referred to as adding the financial information to the inventory management process and providing the required linkages to ensure a common database is used corporate wide to track and manage assets. Many companies also include intellectual capital and skills as Corporate Assets.
