Asset management is the discipline defining and documenting all corporate IT assets. This usually includes the financial information. However, Configuration Management is the discipline of discovering, gathering, managing and maintaining a database of all assets. Most of these are network connected, therefore the process can be manual or automated.
When this data is transformed into meaningful information and integrated with all other systems management disciplines in the infrastructure, the value is extremely high. It is the first step towards true proactive systems management.
